Listen, Learn, and Lead
In an interview I conducted with Tim Bugg, president & CEO of Capstone Health Alliance, Bugg offered the following advice to current and aspiring healthcare leaders: “Listen, learn and lead.”
If you stop and think about it, this is excellent advice. The reality is that many people, including many leaders, do not carefully listen. In my interviews and discussions with healthcare leaders across America, the topic of poor to mediocre listening is many times listed as a frequent impediment to leadership growth and excellence.
If leaders do not carefully, consistently, and truly listen and learn from those they lead, they cannot and will not excel! Those leaders will never reach their full leadership potential and will never be the best that they can be.
I am currently writing a book that will be published later this year titled Be An Inspirational Leader: Engage, Inspire, Empower. No leader—yes, absolutely no leader—can or will reach their full leadership potential, and the full potential of those they lead, without engaging, inspiring and empowering those they lead. And, it is impossible to fully engage, inspire, and empower without careful, consistent, sincere, and receptive listening.
Tim Bugg said it this way:
“Listen, learn, and lead. I think that’s critical to being at the top of your game, because if you can’t hear people and you can’t learn from people then you’ll never be able to lead. I think all three go hand in hand.”
Review your own behavior. Not your intentions, but your hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly behavior. Do you carefully, consistently, and purposefully listen to those you lead? Do you carefully, consistently, and purposefully learn from those you lead? Regardless of your title or what you may have accomplished, the people you lead have much to offer and to teach you!
Reach your full potential as a leader. “Listen, learn and lead.”
