Leaders – Are You Limiting Your Own Potential?

In an interview I conducted with Mark West, President of SharedClarity, West made the following statement:

I’ve learned that a person’s will is stronger than pretty much any obstacle you can put in front of them; if you really want it, obstacles can be overcome. Don’t put up any self-imposed barriers, because you can pretty much get through whatever you want if you really want to do it.

What is it, as a leader, that you have not yet achieved? What is it, as a leadership team, that your team has not yet accomplished? Could it be that your will, or the will of your team is not strong enough? Could it be self-imposed barriers are preventing you and your leadership team from all that could be accomplished?

Here is a great question for your next leadership team meeting. “What barriers, particularly self-imposed barriers, are in the way of all that you can be and accomplish, and all that we can be and accomplish?”

I am betting that if serious and thoughtful discussion takes place, there will be acknowledgment that many, if not most of the barriers are self-imposed. Put more bluntly, after serious thought and discussion, many of the barriers will be seen as conscious or unconscious self or team-created excuses.

Mark West is absolutely correct. One of the dominant characteristics of excellent leaders is the ability and tenacity to model, teach, and inspire individuals, teams, and entire organizations the reality that “If you really want it, obstacles can be overcome. Don’t put up any self-imposed barriers, because you can pretty much get through whatever you want if you really want to do it.”

Discuss this crucial question and concept at your next leadership meeting. You may be amazed at the positive results!
