Leaders: 4 Ways to Stay Relevant
Last year, I conducted and filmed an interesting, in-depth interview with Glen Hall, former Senior Vice President of Sales at MD Buyline and now an independent consultant.
Glen stated this important point: “Be absolutely sure that you, as a leader, and that you and your colleagues, as an organization, are truly relevant!” While I took the opportunity to discuss relevance as a leader last year, since then I have learned more from other leaders in regards to specific steps you can take to make sure you are a relevant leader.
If you desire to be more relevant as a leader and as an organization, carefully consider the following question: “Within the last 90 days, what have I specifically learned that is very important in order to better serve the most important needs and desires of the different individuals, groups, and communities I serve?”
If you can’t think of a specific answer, consider employing these tips from fellow colleagues and leaders in your own leadership routine:
4 Ways to Ensure Relevance
- Communicate & Connect
- “Communicate well at all levels of the organization, and go and see the work being done.” – Mary Ellen Doyle, Cooperate VP of Nursing Operations at Scripps Health
- Credibility, Consistency, and Alignment
- “Maintain your personal credibility, consistently produce and achieve, and align yourself with good people.” – Marc Reynolds, SVP of Payer Relations at Scripps Health
- Getting Grounded
- “I spend a ton of time praying, reading, and thinking; I’ve found if I do that early in the day, it gives me the chassis to stand on and build on for the rest of the day where things make sense in the right context. Otherwise, you feel like you’re just a feather floating on the ocean and you’re not really in control of where you’re going.” – Geoff Brenner, President & CEO of TPC
- Teaching
- “I get up every morning of the year, 365 days of the year, and I hop on my computer after I get a cup of coffee, and I summarize all the major articles in health care—the local newspaper, the L.A. Times, the New York Times, the Washington Post, Health Leaders Magazine, Modern Healthcare, etc. I do a scan, then I summarize that in a document I send it out to [Scripps employees]… because I want them to start to understand the drivers of the things that are going on in healthcare that are the reasons people are making the changes in our organization. That stimulates important questions when we get a chance to discuss things face to face.” – Chris Van Gorder, President & CEO of Scripps Health.
All of these leaders have employed different measures to make sure they stay relevant in their organizations, and that their organizations stay relevant in the industry. They have aligned themselves to attain personal, professional, and organizational success—and so can you!
