Do a Great Job Where You Are!
In a videotaped interview with Chris Van Gorder, President & CEO of Scripps Health in San Diego, California, Van Gorder told me the story of a mid-level employee who seemed to be particularly focused on “networking.”
Van Gorder told me that everywhere he went in the San Diego area for hospital or healthcare related meetings or networking events, she was always there. She consistently and openly let everyone know that she was looking for, and deserving of promotional opportunities up the chain of command.
The problem, Van Gorder explained, was that she was not focused on doing a great job in the position she already held at Scripps Health. She was more focused on networking and climbing the corporate ladder. She was far more focused on obtaining a perceived bigger job and a bigger title than she was on doing a great job in the position she already held.
Bad mistake! This employee ultimately became frustrated and disenchanted and ended up leaving Scripps Health not for a bigger or better job, but because her supervisors felt that she was not doing a good job in the position she already held.
She lost her job because she was more focused on finding a bigger and better job as opposed to doing a great job where she already was.
Unfortunately, this is not an infrequent or unusual story or circumstance. Many people are “climbers” as opposed to highly focused, dependable producers. Rather than focusing on great work and great results where they are, they are focused on “bigger and better” elsewhere.
Van Gorder made the excellent and powerful point that if you do a great job where you are, word will get around, and leaders and organizations will absolutely and proactively find you. If you do a great job where you are, your reputation will do much of your networking for you! Leaders and organizations will proactively find you and offer you much bigger and better jobs, titles, and compensation.
Do a great job where you are. I guarantee you that the bigger and better will take care of itself!
