January 4, 2023 – The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and HACC have announced a partnership to support area residents who want to pursue careers as pharmacy technicians.

Students who complete the Pharmacy Technician Certificate program at the community college and are hired by UPMC will receive payments equivalent to the full cost of the program during their first year of employment, in addition to their salaries. In return, the student agrees to a two-year work commitment at UPMC in Central Pa.

“Students who successfully complete the Pharmacy Technician Certificate program are prepared to sit for the nationally recognized credential of Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board,” Susan Biggs, executive director of Healthcare Education and Training in HACC’s Office of Workforce Development and Continuing Education, said in a news release.

The Pharmacy Technician Certificate program is a 20-week course that can be taken entirely online. While enrolled in the program, students will also have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience by working at UPMC in the Pharmacy Department as a paid tech-in-training.
