Tufts Medical Center reports zero COVID-19 inpatients, first time since March 2020

May 3, 2023 – For the first time since March 21, 2020, a Boston hospital has reported that it was treating zero COVID-positive patients. Since 2020, COVID-rates have jumped up and down depending on the season and how contagious the strain was at the moment.

Hospitals have faced about 3 three years of a constant barrage of infections, creating a challenging environment for healthcare workers and hospitals across the world. Shira Doron, Chief Infection Control Officer for Tufts Medicine told Boston 25, “This is a milestone that we didn’t know when or if we would ever see.” Recently, COVID rates have leveled out through vaccinations and widespread community immunity.

“COVID is not going away, but we are in such a much better place than we were in 2020,” Doron explained. “We are going to see ups and downs, waves of infections, hopefully settling out into a seasonal pattern in the winter that we can predict better.”
