October 9, 2023- Sterile Processing Week is recognized October 8-14, 2023 to highlight the specialists that are employed in sterile processing departments. Sterile processing technicians and specialists—responsible for the cleaning, disinfection, assembly and delivery of surgical and other reusable medical equipment—are among the unsung heroes in healthcare. Without properly sterilized instruments, hospital procedures can slow or come to a halt while also placing patients and staff at risk for dangerous diseases and infections.
Similar to other healthcare professions post-pandemic, there is a staffing crisis in sterile processing, which results in low morale, a reduction in productivity, and an increased risk for mistakes. In 2021, The University of Kansas Health System confronted these challenges head-on by creating a unique internship program that combines academic study with 400 hours of on-site clinical experience. During the 20-week program, The University of Kansas Health System sterile processing technician interns shadow operating room clinicians and staff, witnessing fist-hand instrument preparations and use. The interns also meet patients.
The result is an ongoing pipeline of well-trained SPTs passionate about their work and their role in overall patient safety and care. At the same time, staffing and quality at The University of Kansas Health System have improved.
