Shiley Flexible Tracheostomy Tubes from Medtronic: Same Trusted Brand, More Advanced Design

September 3, 2021 – Medtronic will discontinue the manufacture and distribution of the legacy Shiley disposable and reusable cuffed and cuffless tracheostomy tube product portfolio, effective September 30, 2021. These products will be available to order through September 30, 2021, or until the supply is depleted. These products will be replaced with the enhanced Shiley flexible (flex) adult tracheostomy tube product portfolio.

The enhanced Shiley flex adult tracheostomy tube product portfolio offers an expanded size range along with multiple design enhancements. These clinician-inspired enhancements include the taper-shaped TaperGuard cuff. The TaperGuard cuff may help protect the lungs and minimize tracheal impact by reducing fluid leakage by 99% and exerting 18.6% less lateral wall pressure on the trachea. In addition, TaperGuard cuff technology can help improve a clinician’s ability to provide mechanical ventilation with the ability to titrate ventilator air leaks that is 65% greater than with earlier-generation Shiley tracheostomy tubes.2

Shiley flex tracheostomy tubes were designed with larger inner diameters compared to the legacy Shiley tracheostomy tubes. Airflow around the outer cannula when the cuff is deflated has increased by an average of 242%.2 It has been found that improved airflow may reduce the work of breathing required to speak and wean from a tracheostomy tube.3

Other enhancements in the new family of Shiley flex tracheostomy tubes include color-coding by size (for disposable inner cannula products only), an expanded range of sizes, a soft material made with a non-DEHP plasticizer, a clear flange, and a design that make it possible to ventilate with or without an inner cannula.

Shiley tracheostomy tubes have a proven 40-year history with over 760 million products used around the world.

1. Internal benchtop testing results. Results reflect the Shiley™ flexible adult tracheostomy tube with TaperGuard™ cuff, disposable inner cannula tubes ability to titrate / control ventilator air leak in comparison to the Shiley™ tracheostomy tube cuffed with disposable inner cannula (DCT). Benchtop test # 10122514.

2. Internal bench-top testing results. Results reflect testing the Shiley™ flexible adult tracheostomy tube with TaperGuard™ cuff, disposable inner cannula versus the Shiley™ DCT tracheostomy tube with disposable inner cannula at the same cuff pressure of 25 cm H2O. Benchtop test # 10122514.
