Record cargo volumes reported for Port of Savannah

February 14, 2022 – The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the Port of Savannah hit another record month of cargo volumes for the month of January.

According to the Georgia Porty Authority, “nearly 480,000 container units of imports and exports moved across Savannah’s docks last month. That’s an increase of 4% compared with January 2021, when cargo volumes were already unusually high.”

In an effort to reduce traffic jams, the port authority added workers and new equipment last fall. Additionally, it set up inland sites to “temporarily store cargo and free up space at Savannah’s container terminal.”

Port officials told AJC that Savannah posted record container numbers for all 12 months of 2021. The Port of Savannah is fourth-busiest U.S. seaport for cargo in shipping containers.
