August 24, 2021 – NorthShore University HealthSystem (Evanston, IL) is in merger talks with Edward-Elmhurst Health (Warrenville, IL), sources familiar with the matter reported.
A combination would create a nine-hospital network, including a behavioral health hospital, and give NorthShore increased access to patients in the western suburbs.
Since plans to merge with Advocate Health Care fell through in 2017, NorthShore has added Northwest Community Healthcare (Chicago, IL) and Swedish Hospital (Chicago, IL) for a total of six Chicago-area hospitals.
Edward-Elmhurst Health has 7,700 employees and is comprised of Edward Hospital, Elmhurst Hospital and Linden Oaks Behavioral Health, as week as more than 50 outpatient locations.
In 2018, Edward-Elmhurst Health was reportedly in talks to get acquired by Sanford Health (Sioux Falls, SD) but a deal did not materialize.
Representatives for NorthShore and Edward-Elmhurst have not responded to requests for comment.
