November 18, 2021 – Upstate University Hospital (Syracuse, NY) announced it would temporarily close 124 beds, leaving 544 beds open (a reduction of about 20%) due to an ongoing shortage of nurses.
Hospital officials say they are pursuing aggressive advertising for new employees as well as improving pay for extra work, including enhanced overtime pay for nurses and vacation day accruals.
The hospital currently has 400 open nursing positions and a total workforce of 1,440, according to CNYCentral.
