September 16, 2024- The United States is expected to have a shortage of up to 64,000 physicians by the end of 2024, according to McKinsey & Company and AAMC. Current projections indicate that the physician deficit could grow up to 86,000 by 2036. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the already substantial levels of burnout among physicians, contributing to unprecedented departure from the industry. Healthcare organizations are increasingly navigating attracting and retaining physicians to keep up with patient demand.
McKinsey & Company focused a recent physician survey on unearthing the mindsets that may be pushing doctors in the U.S. out of the workforce, and found that there is urgent need to take action. Survey categories included data on physician turnover rates, retention challenges, why physicians leave, workload and wellbeing, flexibility, inclusion in decision making, and delegation of tasks.
