July 14, 2021 – Intermountain Healthcare plans to close its 25 retail pharmacies in Utah, affecting around 250 employees.
Intermountain Healthcare earlier this month entered into an agreement with CVS Pharmacy to transfer prescriptions and inventory. CVS Pharmacy will work with all new patients to ensure that they can continue to access their medications easily and without disruption.
The 25 pharmacies are located throughout the state and are scheduled to close in August.
Intermountain Healthcare told local news that while 250 employees are affected by the shuttering of the pharmacies, it’s not a layoff situation because the plan is to transition them to other jobs.
The retail pharmacies that are closing have low customer usage, Intermountain said. In 2020, the financial loss for the locations was $11 million. Through May of this year, the loss has been $6 million.
Customers will have the option to transfer their prescriptions to any pharmacy, the company said.
Inpatient pharmacies will not be affected by the change.
