Hospitals urge emergency steps on IV fluid shortage after Hurricane Helene

October 9, 2024- Hospitals are urging the White House to help support the effort to conserve supplies of IV bags as Baxter’s North Carolina production facility remains closed due to hurricane damage. Numerous hospitals across the U.S. including in Michigan, Minnesota, California, Pennsylvania, and more have implemented IV fluid conservation plans and warned the public of potential supply disruptions, according to USA Today. Many hospitals have already implemented plans to conserve IV fluids and ensure patient access to health services. Hospitals are urging the FDA to find international suppliers of sterile IV solutions and extend the shelf-life of all sterile IV and peritoneal dialysis solutions that are nearing expiration, until the facility gets back up and running.
