February 16, 2021 – This year marks 10 years of Coloplast’s support of the Ostomy Home Skills kits by the American College of Surgeons (ACS). These kits provide patients with comprehensive, interactive materials to enable learning and practicing of the skills needed for optimal postoperative recovery.
According to the company, patients who use the kit have more confidence in managing their ostomy than patients who do not use the kit. Further, those patients also use 42% fewer additional services and seek 50% less emergency room care, compared with those not using the kits.
Associations who have collaborated in reviewing the skills kit content include:
- American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS)
- American Urological Association (AUA)
- Wound Ostomy and Continence Nurses Society (WOCN)
- United Ostomy Association of American (UOAA)
- American Pediatric Surgical Association (APSA)
- American Pediatric Surgical Nurses Association (APSNA)
- ACS Commission on Cancer (CoC)
“Proper pre-surgical education is so vital for a patient facing a life-altering and often life-saving ostomy surgery. We have recently agreed to continue this support and are so proud to have supported thousands of patients using these kits over the last 10 years. We are committed to this type of education which has been proven to help reduce unnecessary healthcare utilization and improve outcomes,” says VP of Marketing Steen Morvan, Chronic Care in North America.
