CMS renews The Joint Commission’s deeming authority for Laboratories

June 28, 2024- In response to the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) review of The Joint Commission’s deeming renewal application, the organization made changes to its elements of performance (EPs). CMS announced in the May 24 Federal Register that deeming authority was renewed for The Joint Commission’s Laboratory and Point-of-Care Testing Accreditation Program. The changes to the EPs include added calibration verification to the list of required written procedures, clarified proficiency testing related to secondary analyzers, test systems, assays, and examinations, clarified the difference between proficiency testing participation and proficiency testing performance, and clarified the required actions for follow-up on proficiency testing failures.

The revised standards will be posted on the Prepublication Standards page of The Joint Commission’s website.
