September 26, 2023- New data is available from MedStar Health to raise awareness of breast cancer on National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October). MedStar Health recently conducted a survey and found that 59% of women aged over 40 do not get annual mammograms.
Breast cancer experts that have been closely following developments related to breast cancer diagnosis found that:
- The majority of women over age 40 (59%) do not follow the recommended guidelines of getting a mammogram every year.
- A surprising 23% of women over 40 have never had a mammogram.
- 62% did not know that age is a risk factor
- 24% did not know that family history of breast cancer is a risk factor
- 56% did not know that cigarette smoking is a risk factor
