October 12, 2023- 88% of 653 surveyed healthcare IT organizations found that healthcare organizations have experienced an average of 40 cyber attacks in the past 12 months, according to a report from Ponemon Institute and Proofpoint, Inc. The average cost of a cyber attack experienced by healthcare organizations increased by 13% from the previous year, to $4.99 million in total. 66% of organizations reported that attacks such as cloud compromise, ransonware, supply chain, and business email compromise had disrupted patient care.
Secondly, ransomware remains a threat to healthcare organizations, as all organizations surveyed had at least one data launch or confidential healthcare data breach within the past two years.
Healthcare organizations feel most vulnerable in the face of cloud compromise, where attackers gain control over cloud-based email capabilities.
Cyber attacks can adversely affect the patient care experience, and industry execs should be aware of their potential threat and work together to build a strong defense against cybersecurity threats.
